🔴 1. Engine Cranks Slowly or Struggles to Start

This is the most obvious sign. When your car takes longer than usual to start — especially on cold mornings — your battery is losing its charge capacity. The motor sounds like it's "struggling." Don't wait for it to completely refuse to start.

💡 2. Dim Headlights and Electrical Flickering

Your battery powers all electrical systems. If you notice your headlights are dimmer than usual, your dashboard lights flicker, or your power windows move slowly — your battery may be weak. These are easy to miss but very reliable early warnings.

🔔 3. Battery Warning Light on Dashboard

Modern cars have a battery-shaped warning light. If it turns on while driving, it could be the battery or the alternator (which charges the battery). Either way, visit a battery expert immediately.

🤢 4. Swollen or Bloated Battery Case

If you pop the hood and notice the battery casing looks bloated or swollen, stop driving immediately. This is caused by excessive heat (very common in Delhi summers) and means the battery is damaged internally. A swollen battery can leak acid and damage your engine bay.

👃 5. Rotten Egg / Sulfur Smell Near Engine

A sulfuric rotten-egg smell near the engine is a sign that your battery is leaking. This is dangerous — battery acid is corrosive. Have it inspected and replaced as soon as possible.

☀️ Why Delhi Heat Destroys Batteries Faster

Batteries work through chemical reactions. High temperatures (Delhi can touch 45°C in May–June) accelerate these reactions, causing the battery fluid to evaporate and internal components to corrode much faster than normal. A battery that lasts 5 years in a cooler city may last just 2–3 years in Delhi.

Direct sunlight heats up the engine bay and battery. Consistently parking in shade or a covered garage can significantly slow down battery degradation. If you use an office parking lot, request a covered spot.

If you don't drive your car for more than 2 weeks, the battery slowly discharges on its own. When a battery goes completely flat and then is recharged repeatedly, it permanently loses capacity. Start your car and let it run for 10–15 minutes if you haven't driven it in a while.

Battery terminals corrode over time, showing a white/blue crusty buildup. This increases resistance and makes your battery work harder. Clean terminals regularly with a toothbrush dipped in baking soda + water solution, then dry thoroughly.

Sitting in your parked car with AC, music or lights running with the engine off? This deeply discharges your battery. Repeated deep discharges are the #1 cause of early battery death in Delhi vehicles.
